Arlena

We calmed down the dragons, who seemed to have had a close call with Morgana’s forces. Several of them had bad wounds, which Hayden gently treated.

“There are ships, Arlena. They’re headed to the human world!”

“Surely Colonel March will stop them. We warned him how dangerous they are,” I said, soothing Firebrand.

“If they can,” Percy said.

“Maybe the council of witches will sense that an attack is incoming from Avalon,” I said, knowing that wasn’t something we could take a chance on. I gave them a thin smile. “Taking down the shields seemed like something easier to do before we got here and faced Morgana in battle.” My hand fell to the broken sword strapped to my hip.

“I know things look grim,” I said softly, “and we don’t have the magic of Excalibur to call upon anymore. But we have each other. And we’re all the world of humans has. If we don’t stand to stop her, she’ll win the day. We can’t let that happen.”

I looked at each man in turn. Hayden looked back, calm. Wane nodded. A half grin of pride played on Percy’s lips. Lance full out beamed. And Evan seemed nervous but determined.

“The knights of the Round Table,” I said. “You are worthy of the honor. More so even in this life than the last. I am proud to have each one of you by my side. And I hope that one day, we’ll get to sit together at another Round Table. But not until this battle is won.”

“Until then,” I took a step forward and extended my hand out to them, “we are the Round Table, and we’ll make it proud.” Each knight stepped forward and placed their hand on mine.

Then an old grizzly hand completely the set, not quite laying on top, but hovering nearby.

“Where were you, Merlin?” I turned to him as he took a step back.

“I told you,” he said, looking exasperated by my slowness. “that I was waiting for your spirits to be healed. Now that that’s done, let’s get on to the next thing.”

“Morgana is preparing her attack,” I told him, not sure how much he’d overheard. “We have to stop her.”

“Sure, sure. Wait, do you want to just head over there,” he asked, frowning, “or get your sword back first?”

My grip on the hilt of my broken sword tightened my heart beating with hope. “You can fix Excalibur?”

“Me? No. of course not.”

“Why would you…”

“But the Lady in the Lake can.”

He beamed.

“The Lady in the Lake? Who is she?”

He looked at me like I’d gone mad. “It’s Elaine, of course! Why else would she have kept the sword here all this time?”

I took a deep breath, hope deflating from me as quickly as it had arrived.

“Elaine is dead, Merlin.”

Merlin looked at me as though seeing me for the first time. I really could have broken that news better. The two of them didn’t seem to have thought highly of one another, but for all I knew they used to have a torrid love affair.
